FOOTLOOSE The Musical is based on the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon, as Ren, a boy from Chicago who moves to a backwater where dancing is banned (since four youngsters were killed in a crash on their way home from a dance). Ren finds it hard to fit in and he’s in conflict with both elders and peers and this provides the conflict and theme for the show. In two acts set in the small town of Bomont this story is predictable – dancing will be allowed in the end – but it's full of energetic dances and well known songs as well as being irresistible fun.
The main backdrop (the town) worked well and the changes to the various locations such as the church, streets, coffee bar etc were established by the use of furniture and props and were done simply and swiftly.
The costumes were fantastic; colourful, vibrant and established the characters. There was great attention to detail ranging from the townspeople, pretty dresses for church, hot-pants and overalls.
The lighting was effective throughout and well controlled.
The music, under the direction of Jules Dance was of an extremely high standard. The voices were clear and blended well with the music.
Director Martyn Knight drew polished performances from the hugely accomplished cast who gave their characters depth. The talent of all the performers resounded throughout the show and there was great chemistry between the characters. This was an evening of uncomplicated fun with zingy tunes as well as powerful ballads, ending with a foot stomping finale.
