I was delighted to have the opportunity to cover this vibrant production for my colleague, "Flashdance The Musical" with its music from the eighties was the perfect antidote to a chilly spring evening. You require a good Director and a competant Choreographer for a high energy production like this, and Woodhouse Musical Theatre were very fortunate to have both.
Set in Pittsburgh USA, the story revolves around a young girl Alex, (Zoe Cooke) who by day works at "Hurley Steel" and as a dancer in a night club at night. Her experience as a dancer and her stage presence was evident throughout. Her boss Nick (Craig Squance) who has a fantastic vocal singing range, falls in love with Alex and helps her follow her dream to become a professional dancer.
Her three friends Gloria, Jazmin and Keisha (Vicky Marley, Becky White, Angie Gerald) along with a good team of dancers excelled in their routines.
Alex's mother Hannah (Sonia Noble) with her contrasting character, showed how confidence and experience could shine through in both singing and acting. All other supporting principals gave 100% committment.
There was one basic set and the stage crewe kept busy whipping props on and off for the twenty plus scenes, along with good lighting that enhanced the different moods.
Flashdance is not an easy show to stage, you need a hard working cast with lots and lots of energy and enthusiam, and Woodhouse had it in abundance.
My sincere congratulations to all involved both on stage and off.
