Ossett Youth Theatre's Flashback: A Musical Time Machine proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable celebration of musical theatre across the decades. Presented in a cabaret-style revue format, the production showcased the talents of both the Senior and Junior sections of the company, highlighting not only the breadth of their repertoire but also the exceptional standard of performance that has clearly become synonymous with OYT.

From the opening moments it was evident that the company was full of enthusiasm, confidence and genuine enjoyment. The performers approached every number with commitment and energy, creating an infectious atmosphere that immediately engaged the audience. The seamless transitions between contrasting musical styles ensured the show maintained an excellent pace throughout, with every performer contributing to the overall success of the production.

Act One featured an eclectic programme of well-known musical numbers, each bringing something different to the evening. Everybody's Talking About Jamie and Alexander Hamilton provided strong openings before Jenny and the Seniors delivered a wonderfully vibrant "Good Morning Baltimore." Jenny captured Tracy Turnblad's optimism perfectly, supported by an enthusiastic ensemble whose bright smiles and lively choreography created a real feel-good performance.

One of the standout moments of the first act came with "Bohemian Rhapsody/Somebody To Love," performed by Alex, Evie, Leah, Chloe and the Seniors. This ambitious arrangement demonstrated excellent vocal ability from the soloists whilst the ensemble provided superb support throughout. The blend of harmonies, confident staging and sheer commitment to the performance resulted in one of the evening's highlights and was rewarded with deserved appreciation from the audience.

Another memorable performance came from Isabella, Holly, Lily and the Juniors in "Electricity." This number beautifully showcased the younger members of the company. Their precision, confidence and expressive movement demonstrated impressive maturity whilst retaining the excitement and joy that makes youth theatre so special. It was wonderful to see the Juniors performing with such assurance and clearly relishing every moment on stage.

The remainder of the act continued to maintain an exceptionally high standard, moving effortlessly through a variety of musical styles before building towards an exhilarating finale. The closing sequence provided exactly what an interval should—a burst of excitement and energy that left the audience eager to discover what Act Two had in store. The momentum created by the company's enthusiasm ensured anticipation remained high throughout the interval.

Act Two continued the evening's impressive standard with another varied selection of musical theatre favourites.

Kate immediately caught the eye in "All That Jazz." There is a refreshing naturalness to her performances which makes her incredibly watchable. She never appears to overplay a role or seek to dominate the stage, yet the audience is instinctively drawn towards her because of her believable characterisation and understated confidence. This quality was equally evident later in "Supercalifragilistic," where she portrayed Mary Poppins with warmth, poise and effortless charm. Whether performing within the ensemble, delivering a solo, or leading a company number, Kate consistently supports those around her whilst quietly commanding attention through the authenticity of her performance. It is a quality many performers strive for and one she already possesses naturally.

Another particularly enjoyable number was "Pick A Pocket," featuring Lee alongside the Juniors. Lee clearly understands the importance of character-led performance and fully embraced the mischievous spirit of the song. His confident storytelling and expressive performance perfectly conveyed the essence of the piece, providing an excellent example of how effective characterisation can elevate a musical number. The interaction between Lee and the younger cast members created a thoroughly entertaining performance that was both engaging and fun to watch.

The Oliver! finale built superbly through the medley before culminating in "Consider Yourself," performed by the full company. It provided a fittingly energetic conclusion to a hugely entertaining evening. Beyond the lively choreography and enthusiastic vocals, the song carried an especially meaningful message—"consider yourself at home and one of the family." Watching the company together, it was impossible not to feel that this perfectly encapsulates Ossett Youth Theatre itself. There is a genuine sense of friendship, support and belonging evident throughout the organisation, and this welcoming family atmosphere shines through every performance.

Behind the scenes, this polished production was clearly the result of meticulous planning and dedicated rehearsal. Congratulations must go to Producer and Choreographer Jessica Winstanley and Producer and Musical Director Sue Winstanley for creating such a well-structured, polished and thoroughly entertaining production. Their careful selection of repertoire showcased the strengths of performers across both age groups whilst ensuring every member of the company had the opportunity to shine. The slick production values, thoughtful staging and consistently high performance standard reflected the tremendous work invested by the entire creative team.

Flashback: A Musical Time Machine was exactly what a musical revue should be—fun, uplifting and full of variety. More importantly, it celebrated the remarkable talent within Ossett Youth Theatre, giving performers of all ages the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in a production overflowing with energy, vibrancy and confidence. The future of this company is clearly in very safe hands, and audiences can already look forward to seeing what they achieve next.
