When most people think of Fiddler on the Roof, they invariably think of Topol, who brought the character of Tevye to life in the 1971 film adaptation.  He is so synonymous with the role it is difficult to imagine anyone else. The show is really all about the life of this one character and, without a good actor in the role, the show would fall flat. Within a few minutes Tristan Carter had not only made the part his own, but had managed to match the talent of Topol. Tristan was exceptional in every respect and carried the audience along in a flurry of good humour, impressive vocals and great acting.

Golde was equally as delightful.  Her characterisation as the feisty wife of Tevye was superb, but we also witnessed a real tenderness between the pair in their second act duet ‘Do you love me?’

All of the daughters and their suiters gave wonderful performances; each with their own style but with equally good vocals and fine acting skills. There were so many great characters in this show and all were ably handled by this talented cast. The whole cast, adults and children, had worked so hard to bring this show to life.

With so much beautiful music and wonderful ensemble pieces in this show, Director and Choreographer Maisie Carter did a fabulous job bringing it all together.  From the serenity of ‘Sunrise, Sunset’ and ‘Sabbath Prayer’ to the joy of the wedding scene and the humour of ‘Tevye’s Dream’, the audience were treated to one brilliant number after another.  Full of great dancing, real energy and a polished ensemble, Maisie created a really first rate production.

The set, consisting of Tevye’s house which was opened and closed at various points in the show worked well and set changes were very slick and professional by the crew. Props were also just right.

Lighting was effective, if a little dark on the odd occasion, but the switches to a bright light when Tevye was addressing God were always spot on and very effective.  Likewise, sound was very good.

Costumes, hair and make-up were all excellent and the team did a great job of making sure the cast looked perfect and right for the setting and period.

The orchestra was very professional and the Musical Director made sure the whole cast delivered. Unusually, there was one member of the orchestra who was not with the rest of the players in the pit and that was ‘The Fiddler’Not only was he an exceptional musician, but he proved to be equally comfortable on stage.  He sat on top of the roof or sauntered onto the stage at various times to play all of the music live. For me, this really made a great show all the more special.

The large audience were, quite rightly, very enthusiastic about this production and I hope that by the end of the run you received the standing ovation you deserved.  This was a truly brilliant evening of theatre.
