Great Horton are certainly beginning to come out of the doldrums, are going on to bigger and better things, this being proved by a very entertaining and enjoyable evening. This time, as they say, the programme was entirely ourselves and there was some delightful singing provided by the soloists of the Society, among them Geraldine Kilduff and Teresa Lunn, comedy performances by Janet Bentley and Gaye Richardson, John Mason and Richard Bentley the highlight for me was a beautiful rendition of the Gracie Fields Song ‘Sally’ by Pauline Taylor, not as one would perhaps suspect an imitation of ‘our Gracie’ but a straight, well presented version of a lovely song. A couple of monologues completed the solo part of the programme and the rest, completed by The Great Horton Singers, was very well prepared and executed.
The accompaniment was by two electric pianos, and I do wish that a proper sound check was done before the performance – it is very annoying to have chords being checked, through the speakers, whilst the Compere is trying to introduce the show. Once up and running however, the accompaniments were excellent until we came to the carols when the keyboards were reproduced so loudly that we could hardly hear ourselves sing let alone the choir!! But this was the only criticism, modern songs, intricate arrangements and a certain amount of Christmas music all certainly proved to be ‘Favourite Things’. Congratulations Great Horton, I hope that things keep up being ‘on the up’ for you.
