Piles of suitable books – dark, heavy and ageing – were strategically placed around the perimeter of the performance space. So that on taking our seats we were already engaged… intrigued about what was to follow.

We were soon drawn into Faustus’s world of insatiable hunger for knowledge and intellectual status.  Alice Hanks-Rivett playing Faustus had a cool unhurried entitlement – driven to be that special human and willing to put their soul on the line to achieve their aim. There was no hesitation or doubt.

Her humble staff – with unquestioned awe – tidied her mess, scurried around her adding to the atmosphere of adoration.

Very impressive Will Franklin playing Mephistopheles  My goodness you do not want to meet him on a dark night! His makeup was superlative and his delivery spine-chilling! Amazing.

In fact, throughout the play the cast worked seamlessly. Their commitment to bring the various characters to life moved the play along at pace. Of course, congratulations to those who managed the wardrobe – both interesting and imaginative choices.

Every player was totally invested, and word perfect. In fact – it was over far too quickly … Thank you for a very special evening’s entertainment. A beautifully directed and imaginable piece of Shakespeare by Director Fiona Kettle and Niara Martins De Souza.
