It was with great delight I was invited to watch a Farndale Avenue production as I’ve been involved and watched other productions by this Towns Women Guild group of Amateurs. This time it was Hebden Bridge Light Opera Society with their version of The Mikado written by David McGillivray and it contained all the expected mayhem and fun.
It was done with just the right amount of ineptness (deliberate). The ladies of the Chorus and Dancers had the various facial expressions, pushing and shoving. The dancers provided us with tap dancing and dances from various countries around the world.
All the actors playing the Towns Women Guild members and their parts in The Mikado did very well keeping their characters throughout in both guises. Special mention to Rev Bishop (Peter McDonnell) as the only male officially in the cast who had to step in to play one of the Three Little Maids with enthusiasm, even teaching the audience to create an origami eagle during the interval. Also a disastrous stage manager (Karl Boggis) who definitely made his present felt including falling scenery and roof,
Confusion reigned as lines were forgotten and entrances were too early or too late. I have to mention the singing which was excellent by all the cast accompanied very beautifully by the cantankerous pianist (Patricia Astwood) Prompted when not needed and not promoted when needed by Joy Hodge. (As a prompter myself I can associate with this)
The costumes were all in keeping with the play. and bright and colourful provided by Frances Dolan
Directed by Steve Tetlow and Choreographed by Janet Fletcher it was a joy to watch and thank you for inviting me to watch this excellent, funny production.
