This fast-paced - bordering on the farcical - comedy was the perfect vehicle to showcase the talents of this group. Full of great characters and with a script full of twists and turns and innuendos a-plenty the audience were laughing out loud from to start to finish. The premise of the play is that Trevor will do anything to save his marriage to Cheryl and enlists the help of his best friend Bob from the golf club. Mayhem then ensues including the breaking of priceless museum artefacts, mistaken identities, “dead” bodies which keep disappearing and reappearing, dressing for a “Vicars and Tarts” party and - as in any good farce - the dropping of trousers! On a colourful box set, representing the sitting room of a country mansion, the cast timing of the entrances and exits from the multiple doors was excellent. Lynn Zaccarini gave an excellent portrayal as the elderly, eccentric Lady Fotheringham as she goes about organising a murder mystery evening for her elderly friends. Her scene where she was doing her exercises, with bottles of spirits as weights, had the audience howling with laughter. Tim Roberts as her hapless son-in-law Trevor Slater-Rees and Garry Brindley as his friend Bob Todd were both outstanding being at the centre of the action throughout. Tim was very convincing in his disguise as a Vicar as was Garry as the Tart complete with blonde wig, mini-skirt, cropped top and high heels – a complete contrast to his usual panto dame in yellow wellies! Kirsty Williamson gave a very strong performance as Cheryl Slater-Rees, Lady F’s level headed daughter and wife of Trevor. As too did Elizabeth Levy as Bob’s excitable and hot tempered wife Maria. Young Callie Stewart as gardener Euphemia Crump, enlisted by Lady F as a kiss-o-gram for her party, also gave a strong performance. Strong support was given by Bill Williamson and Liz Forrest as Lady F’s “disappearing” murder victims Albert and Grace and by Heather Adams Officer and Oscar Barnett as two hapless burglars. Well done to director Heather Adams Officer and everyone at the Ury Players for delivering such a fun evening on your first full-length play since Covid.
