Opening with an Argentinian film halted by an announcement that Eva Peron “has entered immortality”, Eva’s funeral introduced the large chorus filing past the coffin with reverence.
Che (Gareth Brown) provided observation and narration throughout the show – with excellent stage presence and strong vocals he was an essential part of the production. Nightclub singer Agustin Magaldi was played tongue in cheek by Connor Carson. As Eva worked her way to the top via a string of men, I really enjoyed the innovative pieces of production where actors perfectly conveyed the message. Jordan Mackin sang “Another Suitcase, Another Hall” beautifully as The Mistress.
Nathan Graham took the role of Colonel Juan Peron – strikingly similar in feature to the historical figure and very much in character. He, other principals, and the entire chorus gave excellent support to Aisling Quinn as leading lady, Eva Peron. She was exactly as one would have imagined Evita to be – ambitious, haughty, and manipulative, yet with a hint of vulnerability. Her acting, movement and vocal quality was of a high standard.
The set, with required balcony, functioned well allowing the large cast enough room in crowd and dance scenes. Costumes were authentic - Eva’s white gown and blonde wig were just right. Sound was good and Lighting effective. Ian Milford controlled his orchestra and supported the singers well in the difficult score. Wearing his directorial hat, Ian kept the action moving swiftly along with many original ideas, and with Rebecca’s clever choreography, they produced an excellent show.
