Obscured by gauze curtains, which could be lit from front or behind, Jonny Boyd’s 12 piece orchestra sat beneath a permanent yet versatile set of the Casa Rosada with iconic balcony. They were mainly sympathetic, except for some heavy percussion in one solo number.
After a tentative opening announcement of Eva’s death and subsequent lying in state, Adam Goudy (Che) hit us with a powerful “Oh What A Circus” – exuding authority maintained throughout the show.
Andy Shaw gave a comical pop-star portrayal of tango singer Magaldi. As the Mistress, Anna Warke, sang “Another Suitcase, Another Hall” beautifully. One of the real strengths of this production was the abundance of men who looked the right age for the roles they were playing. A fine example was Harry Coates who played Juan Peron with authority, yet sympathy when needed.
The monumental role of Evita was split between two actresses - Fiona Flynn and Donelle Reynolds. Both gave impeccable performances - acting and singing
Others deserving special mention were Rachel Wilkinson (“Child of Argentina”) and Soloist David McDowell who added impact when Eva “magically” transferred from hospital bed to balcony before the bed became her coffin.
Lighting, Sound, Costumes and Props were all flawless and authentic but the real strength of this production was in its ensemble. Choreography and general crowd movement was perfectly drilled.
It was said that Portrush MS really understood “Evita” and I would agree with one addendum. It takes a good Director to impart their vision through a company and this she did.
