Evita is a musical that premiered in 1978, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical tells the story of Eva Perón, the wife of Argentine President Juan Perón, from her humble early life, her rise to a powerful political and iconic figure in Argentine history, her charity work, and her eventual death.
As we settled into our seats, members of the cast slowly entered to watch an Argentinian film interrupted by the announcement that Eva Peron had died. The set design very simple but elegant, worked well, with the tall flats and slatted flats that the lights poured through with great effect. Projections were used throughout. The main piece a movable staircase, used fully throughout and swept forward to the front to recreate the iconic balcony scene with the audience a part of the crowds. The lighting design greatly enhanced the performance, the balcony scene in particular looked stunning. I want to highlight the costumes, they were fabulous throughout, all of the period. All of Eva Perón's dresses were gorgeous and the iconic white dress was stunning. Also, a special well done to whoever was assisting with Eva’s costume changes, not an easy job. The Choreography was effective and designed well to suit all abilities.
Principal performances:
-
Eva Perón is a beast of a role, and a massive sing, it’s not easy to take on such an iconic well-known role. Your portrayal was strong vocally and you managed to show the moments of vulnerability and insecurity as well as the moments of strength and determination effectively. Well done.
-
Che I loved the quality in your voice, and as the commentator, providing social commentary throughout, your words were clear, and you managed the balance of being in and out of the action onstage well.
-
Juan Peron a strong all-round performance there was a nice relationship shown between you and Eva.
-
Augustin Magaldi an engaging performance and lovely Baritone voice.
-
Peron’s Mistress you delivered a heart-breaking and vulnerable performance. Beautifully sung.
The ensemble played a crucial role in creating the atmosphere and setting of the show. They portrayed a variety of characters, from peasants to soldiers to high society elites. Strong vocals with some tricky harmonies and some lovely Tango dancing. I particularly enjoyed the “Art of the Possible” and the staging with the chairs. “A New Argentina” again another highlight. I must mention the Santa Evita Child, a very engaging performance, I found myself drawn to her throughout and a beautiful voice.
I also heard lots of positive comments from the audience so, congratulations to the creative team, cast and crew.
