Evita concentrates on the life of Argentinian political leader Eva Peron the second wife of the Argentinian President Juan Peron.  Based on the historical story, Eva was born Maria Eva Duarte and it follows her early life from rags to riches.  Her rise to power, her charity work and eventually her death at the age of 33 years of age.  She aligns herself to the poor winning herself and Peron popularity among the Argentinians as she becomes a hero to the working classes and an enemy to the rich.  Eva became the most powerful woman in Latin America before her death.

The wonderful musical score is by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics  and book by Tim Rice.  The musical began as a rock opera concept in an album in 1976, and the first performance was on 21st June 1978 in London's West End.  This blockbuster musical was also made into a film in 1996 starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas.

Paul Matthews, gave a brilliant portrayal of Che Guevara, he acts as narrator throughout the story delivering some of the most memorable songs.  Eva Peron, (Amy Roche-Sheard) produced a consummate performance with confidence and alacrity.  Her former lover Tango singer Augustine Mageldi, (James Preston) was in fine voice and provided a strong performance.    Juan Peron (Tom Daley) came into his own in the second Act when he sang a very moving duet with Eva when she was very ill.  They were two lovely little cameo roles, Peron's mistress (Shelly Lofthouse) and Phoebe Backhouse.

They were well supported by a well-crafted chorus who worked very hard with both movement and good singing, they also moved props swiftly and quietly to help the show move at a great pace.

A good basic set built with steps at each side leading to the neccessary balcony, beautifully lit with effective lighting.  A special mention for the Orchestra that complimented the singers.

Congratulations Giles on an excellent production.
