This musical is based on the true-life story of 16-year-old British schoolboy Jamie Campbell, as he overcomes prejudice and bullying to step out of the darkness to become a drag queen. The leading actor gave an incredibly natural performance in which he embodied Jamie in every facial expression, mannerism and movement and had the audience totally engaged in his performance, feeling every challenge, he faced and celebrating every high
Nicky very sympathetically handled this powerful and moving musical, bringing out the many contrasts within the story, some are comedic, some are sad whilst others are utterly beautiful and poignant. The characters were well developed, and everyone was totally committed to them. All of the leads were excellent and were very well supported by the ensemble. Whilst the musical is loud and proud in its message, Nicky ensured that the principals kept it real by balancing the positive message about self-acceptance with the elements of prejudice, self-doubt and personal trauma
The choreography was dynamic, pacy, and very slick complementing the positive message of the musical perfectly. “Don’t Even Know It” was a terrific opening and the movement with and around the desks worked really well. “Work of Art” was a stand-out too with very clever and interesting choreography using picture frames. The contrasting contemporary dance was well designed and did not overpower the song. All of the cast had been well trained and danced with energy and precision and were a joy to watch.
The lead principals all sang with lovely tuning, dynamics and phrasing and had obviously worked hard to give very accomplished performances. The MD also led the live six-piece band which gave great accompaniment to the singers.
The director, production team and talented cast handled this moving story with realism and sensitivity to produce an uplifting show which was positive and impactful and thoroughly enjoyable.
