It was a pleasure to return to the Poole Lighthouse Theatre after a gap of two years to see this excellent Christmas Musical at the start of the festive season.
I wonder who it was at P & P productions that first proposed the idea of producing Elf The Musical on the lead up to Christmas, and then marketing it to local schools. I understand that they sold out , so given the ongoing worries and restrictions that have been caused by Covid19 , it was a fantastic achievement
The success of the show relies on having the right person to play the role of Buddy the Elf and Jamie Thomson was perfect for the role, he was so natural, as if it had been written especially for him.
Whilst he was on the stage I found it difficult to take my eyes off him and look elsewhere, because his characterisation was amazing . I also thought that all the other principal members of the cast also gave excellent performances and they were supported by a very enthusiastic ensemble.
Sadly there were no musicians in the orchestra pit, all the music was provide by excellent backing tracks and the overall sound was kept at a good balance throughout the production. I know orchestras are expensive, but personally I prefer live music.
The scenery, provided by projections on the back cloth, were very effective and looked superb, but at times I felt the stage needed extra dressing down the sides instead of just black cloths.
This was a superb, happy, feel good musical, that the capacity audience clearly loved, I am sure that it got everyone into the Spirit of Christmas. My day job involves transporting children to and from one of the local schools that attended the Friday morning performance. In the afternoon they were all still buzzing about the wonderful show that they had been to see and several even said that it was better than the film Elf.
Congratulations to all involved, It was wonderful to see you all, back doing what we all love.
