It is always a pleasure to visit this enthusiastic group and this was a lovely start to the festive season. I have to confess the film had passed me by so I knew very little about the story.
The Hall was decorated festively with a great many ‘Elves’ in attendance. This group has a very short window to set up and perform, moving in on Friday after school, with technical and Dress rehearsals on the Saturday and a performance Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. This was reflected in the set, which was minimal, an open stage with carefully thought out furniture and other items brought on and removed as necessary. The costumes helped reflect the characters and everyone was comfortable in them. The costumes for the Elves in Santa’s workshop were lovely.
The music was difficult in places but everyone rose to the challenge with confident solos and good chorus singing. The music had been well taught and Musical Director Graeme Savage was in total control at all times.
The show has an amusing script and everyone worked hard to bring out the humour. The principals had worked to develop their individual characters, with a particularly mature performance from Mr Hobbs. Buddy the Elf is important as the title character and he carried the role confidently. The chorus supported the action well becoming shoppers, tourists and elves as required. There were some lovely moments in the skating scene.
The whole show had a ‘feel good’ factor with everyone enjoying being a part of it. As always with this company the more experienced members were encouraging the younger less experienced ones. I think my favourite part was in Santa’s workshop with all the Elves making the toys.
Well done everyone on giving your audience an entertaining start to Christmas. You have made me realise I have missed out and must now go and watch the film.
