This play was originally performed in 2010, but its themes are even more relevant and resonant today, and it was interesting to see how the cast dealt with such a densely intertwined and complex plot.
The principals depicted their complex characters with emotional sensitivity and depth, and they had great support from an impressively versatile ensemble, mainly multi-cast in very distinct portrayals.
Clever direction made full use of available space and different levels, and the traverse stage caused no issues with sight lines or performers standing too long with their backs to any one portion of the audience.
Although this was not a musical, there are many such productions who could take note from how this play used music; it was never obtrusive but was effectively used to link temporally disparate scenes, and to create a sense of place and time in the absence of a set – meanwhile, accompanying choreography was sharp and snappy, and very much an organic part of the narrative, sometimes almost shifting into physical theatre.
