Disney's Beauty and the Beast

It was a real pleasure to be invited to review this production for Winscombe Youth Theatre while covering on Mike’s behalf. This visit carried particular significance for me, as my own theatre journey has strong links to the late John Butler, whose contribution to the history of Winscombe theatre was so significant. It was an honour to attend this production, and I have to say that his influence and passion for youth theatre can still very much be felt within the group today.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast tells the timeless story of Belle, a young woman who longs for adventure beyond her provincial village, and the Beast, a prince trapped by a powerful curse. Through themes of kindness, acceptance, and looking beyond appearances, the story has become one of Disney’s most beloved productions and remains a favourite for audiences of all ages.

I was immediately struck by the incredibly clever use of space within the venue. Utilising the floor as the primary performance area while employing the main stage as a supporting space was a stroke of genius, and it was used to great effect throughout the performance. I also enjoyed the use of the projection screen. There were occasions where I felt it perhaps was not essential, though I say this as a compliment to the strength of the physical staging, which was often so visually engaging that additional projection felt unnecessary.

From the outset, I thoroughly enjoyed the introductory announcement from Gaston. These small added touches can make a significant difference to audience engagement and immediately helped establish the world of the show before the story had even begun.

The opening scene landed very well, with the Narrators instantly drawing us into the story and creating exactly the atmosphere required. One of the most impressive aspects of the production was undoubtedly the set design. The revolving elements served the production exceptionally well, ensuring that scene changes flowed seamlessly. Not once did I feel a transition was too slow or disruptive; instead, the production-maintained momentum from the very beginning and carried it confidently through to the final curtain.

For a youth production in particular, the confidence, creativity, and ambition on display were extremely impressive and set the tone for a thoroughly enjoyable evening of theatre.

Technical effects

As I mentioned previously, the set was extraordinary and served the production exceptionally well throughout. The revolving elements were both practical and visually impressive, allowing the story to flow seamlessly from scene to scene. Alongside this, the lighting design was excellent, helping to establish mood, atmosphere, and focus at exactly the right moments. The music and sound effects were equally effective, enhancing the storytelling and immersing the audience further into the world of the production.

I must also congratulate the team, and Carolyne in particular, for a superb display of costumes and props. This is an area that can sometimes be overlooked, yet it played a hugely important role in the success of the production. The attention to detail throughout was excellent, and the costumes helped bring the characters to life while contributing significantly to the overall visual impact of the show. A very strong aspect of the production indeed.

Choreographer

This was a wonderful example of choreography that was simple yet incredibly effective. In a youth production, creating movement that is engaging, clear, and achievable for performers of varying ages and experience is no mean feat, so I must take my hat off to you for pulling this together in such an impressive way.

What stood out most was how natural everything felt. Nothing appeared cramped, clumsy, or out of place, and the movement consistently supported both the storytelling and the performers. The result was a production that felt polished, confident, and visually engaging throughout.

Belle

You gave a lovely performance as Belle and captured the character’s warmth and determination throughout. Your vocals were spot on, delivered with confidence and clarity, making for a very enjoyable portrayal of this iconic role.

Beast

You maintained the Beast’s sense of menace and authority very well throughout the production, ensuring you dominated the scenes that required it. As the story progressed, you also allowed the audience to see the softer side of the character, creating a well-balanced and believable portrayal.

Maurice

You brought great character to the role of Maurice and demonstrated excellent comedy timing throughout. Making comedy look effortless is a real skill, and your performance provided many enjoyable moments while remaining true to the heart of the character.

Gaston

Confidence is absolutely essential when playing Gaston, and that was something you brought in abundance throughout the performance. Fully embracing his larger-than-life ego and personality, you leaned into the character brilliantly and created a portrayal that was both entertaining and entirely believable.

Lefou

Another wonderful comedy role within the show, and one that you played superbly. Bringing great energy and personality to every appearance, you provided a perfect foil to Gaston and delivered plenty of entertaining moments throughout the performance.

Lumiere

What an outstanding performance this was. From the moment you appeared in stage, you were completely captivating, bringing boundless energy, charisma, and confidence to the role. Embracing every aspect of Lumiere’s larger-than-life personality, you truly went to town on the character and delivered phenomenal comedy throughout. Bravo on a superb performance.

Cogsworth

Maintaining Cogsworth’s poise, order, and ever-present sense of responsibility is a challenge in itself, and you did so brilliantly throughout the production. Bringing great balance to the chaos unfolding around you, your character work was consistent and believable.

Mrs Potts

Mrs Potts is such a charming and important character within the story, and you portrayed her warmth and kindness beautifully throughout. Delivering the iconic “Beauty and the Beast” is no small responsibility, yet you performed it wonderfully, creating a truly lovely moment within the production and one that will stay with the audience long after the curtain falls.

Ensemble

As anyone who has read my reviews before will know, I firmly believe that the ensemble is the backbone of any production and nowhere was this more evident than here. What made this achievement even more impressive was the wide range of ages representing within the company, yet every performer contributed with equal commitment, energy, and enthusiasm. Collectively, you created a vibrant and believable world on stage, supporting the principles superbly while remaining engaging in your own right. Simply put, you were an absolute delight to watch and should all be immensely proud of what you achieved together.

Director

Directing a youth production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is no small undertaking. The show demands strong storytelling, memorable characters, seamless transitions, effective use of space, and above all else, the ability to bring together a company of varying ages and experience levels into one cohesive production. I am delighted to say that you achieved this admirably.

What stood out most throughout the evening was the confidence of the vision. The clever use of the performance space, the excellent pacing, the imaginative staging, and the commitment shown by every member of the cast all pointed towards a production that had been carefully planned and thoughtfully executed. Not once did the momentum drop, and the revolving set pieces ensured that the story continued to move forward with purpose from beginning to end.

Particularly impressive was the way in which every performer appeared to understand their role within the wider production. Whether in a principal role, supporting role, or ensemble position, there was a clear sense of teamwork and shared ownership of the story being told. This is often one of the greatest indicators of strong direction, and it was evident throughout the performance.

The technical elements, choreography, costumes, and character work all combined to create a production that felt polished, ambitious, and full of heart. Most importantly, the young performers on stage looked as though they were thoroughly enjoying themselves, and that enjoyment transferred directly to the audience.

Overall, this was a wonderfully entertaining evening of theatre and a real credit to everyone involved. It was particularly special for me to visit a group so closely connected to the legacy of John Butler, whose passion for theatre clearly continues to inspire those involved today. Thank you once again for your warm hospitality, and congratulations to the entire company on delivering a production that was imaginative, energetic, and a genuine delight to watch.
