I always look forward to my visit to Ruthin Panto Society, this year was no exception with their production of Dick Whittington, written and directed by Polly Snape. Dick Whittington, however, is one of the less popular pantomimes performed, and it is quite a while since I saw a production of this story, most probably your previous production in 2015.
Once again, the stage and part of the auditorium, with steps each side for the Company to use, brought the cast and the audience closer together. The opening chorus number made us sit up and take note. This is a Society where adults and children really gel together on stage, all reacting to what is taking place.
Jess Gould in her first role in panto, fully justified her selection in the title role as Dick Whittington, with a strong voice in both script and score. She was accompanied by Charlotte Kameen as Tommy who gave a wonderful portrayal of Tommy the Cat. Solid performances from Pete Kirkham as Curly O’Wurly, and Rosie Jones as Nelly O’Kelly from the pub. Cocktails looked delicious !!!
A reliable performance from Mike van der Eijk as Alderman Fitzwarren, who is no stranger to the stage, as I have seen him many times previously. Bex Bristowe gave a polished performance as Alice Fitzwarren, daughter of Alderman Fitzwarren, who eventually tricked her father into her venturing on to The Good Ship Buccaneer. Carys Jones as Alice’s best friend Connie, together with Beth Morris as Bonnie, sang beautifully, harmony was superb with both characters enjoying the theatrical experience. A big cheer for Dave Snape as he appeared once again as Billy, the audience love him. The dynamic duo, Wandalina and Tallulah energetically played by Ceri Wyn Jones and Emma Parry respectively, were once more in action adding much comedy to the production. Stephen Whitehead completed the cast as Rat Inspector/Mayor whilst at the commencement Gavin Pendrey Edwards, Auntie Gertie sent a message to the Company and audience. (Spangly Voiceover Gal).
Ruthin Youth Theatre contributed greatly to the success of Dick Whittington. Charlotte Kameen was perfectly cast as Tommy the Cat darting everywhere whilst talented Evie Jones gave us a very confident, mature characterisation of Queen Ratilda enjoying all the ‘BOOS’. The youngsters, full of energy, portrayed Rats and Buccaneers and it was evident they were enjoying their stagecraft.
I was very impressed with the chorus numbers which were beautifully choreographed by Hanna Medi Roberts. Everyone knew their tasks and it was lovely to see so many smiling faces. Costumes were well selected and the efficient stage crew saw the performances flowed with no pauses during scenery changes. Wonderful moment towards the end when the flying dragon with flapping wings appeared raised up above stage, to bring the whole company home and back to reality.
Thanks once again Ruthin Panto Society, another great Pantomime for your Repertoire.
