Destination Anywhere: A Musical Journey

TWODS are back and have started as I am sure they mean to go on! The concept for this show was about travel, which most of us have been deprived of for quite a while. We start at the airport where our intrepid travellers begin their adventures and we are transported through 40 different countries by song and dance from 37 different musicals, some familiar but some not so well known.

Back projection and props were all important to give us a sense of the country. Scene changes were seamless. Lighting was also important as there was no other scenery but, and this is always my biggest gripe! Why do lighting designers find it necessary to shine spotlights and bright sidelights directly at the audience? Costumes were excellent for each country. Daniel Moulton and Steve Trill did an excellent job with the eight-piece orchestra and the singing from both chorus and soloists was mesmerizing. Choreography was slick and energetic. There’s too many musicals and countries to mention but I have to say one of the highlights was when we were ‘visiting’ Ireland and the three ladies dressed as tour guides (reminiscent of ‘Hi De Hi’ with yellow blazers and white skirts!) sung ‘Cheap Flights’ made famous in 2011 by the group 'Fascinating Aida'. The audience absolutely loved it and the sentiments of the song as relevant today as they were then. All too soon, journey’s end and we are back at the airport.

 Compilation shows take a lot of work and I have nothing but admiration for the professionalism of Adele Ebbage, who devised and choreographed the show. The whole cast gave their all and it showed their commitment and enthusiasm to keep amateur theatre alive. A most enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment.
