The theatre was welcoming and well-staffed with volunteers but, disappointingly, the audience number was quite low. However, this was the first night of three shows so hopefully many more people were able to enjoy this unmissable show.
The programme was informative, with all participants named over the three shows, as the cast differs for each evening. The front cover was colourful and decorated with various music paraphernalia from across the decades comprising vinyl, cassette tape, Walkman, headphones and a CD.
The costumes comprised black tee shirts emblazoned with ‘Decades’ and colourful, wide trousers which were very attractive and practical for the dance moves.
There were no props on the set, although some were incorporated during the show. The lighting was attractive and both complimented and enhanced the singing and dancing extremely effectively.
The first half of the show was a musical journey from the 1960s to the Noughties. Interspersed with the music were notable world and national events such as the moon landing and the miners’ strike which was interesting and very well executed. There was also a nod towards popular Soap Operas such as ‘Dallas’, ‘Eastenders, ’Neighbours’ and ‘Only Fools and Horses’ which was very engaging.
The ‘Star Wars’ section, involving animated lightsabres, was highly innovative as was the improvised Wimbledon tennis section with the latter involving a tennis ball on a long stick. Full credit to whoever came up with the ideas. The choreography was excellent. We were reminded of dances including the ‘Twist’, ‘Glam Rock’ and ‘Disco’ all of which were performed with confidence and obvious enjoyment. The 1990 Rave section was performed with gusto. A mention must be made to ’The Spice Girls’ and ‘Take That’ tributes which were a joy to observe.
All songs were sung with passion and particularly engaging were the renditions of ‘Feed the World’ and ‘I’ve Had the Time of My Life’. The latter closed the first half of the show and was very apt.
In the second half of the show all seventeen performers entertained the audience by demonstrating their skills. These included not only singing and dancing but also some drumming, line dancing, stand-up comedy and a drag act. It would be difficult to single anyone out as everyone put their hearts into their performances. A special mention must go to the helpers who surreptitiously worked incredibly hard to keep up the pace and give encouragement. They really are dedicated and professional and should feel very proud.
It was a shame to miss out on some of the other performers’ contributions scheduled for different evenings but there is no doubt they would have been just as good as that demonstrated by the wonderful Monday cast.
This was a truly magical show and lifted the spirits on a rather cold and miserable day. Many congratulations to everyone involved.
