Jack, an antiques dealer, shoots and kills a burglar and is tried for manslaughter. However he is acquitted and on his return home regales his girlfriend and neighbours with a disparaging account of the trial. According to the evidence – most of it Jack’s - the victim Philip Mercer had broken in late at night, on being confronted by Jack, produced a gun that Jack got hold of during the ensuing struggle and then used to kill Mercer. On his return from the court Jack
All the cast worked hard as a team and clearly portrayed the individuality of their characters.
Jack’s character ( Mark Hone) handled this complicated character extremely well, with different moods and giving many lengthy accounts of what happened.
Maggie, his girlfriend (Polly Lovegrove) who wants to leave the relationship, portrayed this character superbly. Their neighbours Lynne ( Elaine Demaine) gave a wonderful performance of a women who knows her own mind and Dennis (Shaun Hollingworth,) gave a very good portrayal of a quite unassuming husband. All three of these characters hiding their true feelings towards Jack, each one having their own reason to get rid of him, and relating their own interpretation of what happen that night.
The production was well directed with a touch of humorous sarcasm at times to an otherwise complicated plot.
A super set and props added to the success of this play.
Thank you for a good evening’s entertainment.
