P & P Players

Written by Richard Harris this storyline of the play centres on Julia Darrow who has been seriously injured in a road accident, her lover John, had a heart attack and died whilst driving the car.  To help recover at home from her injury she is help by Gary, a neighbour and handyman, who together with Anne, a counsellor, are try to help Julia get back on her feet. Against advice of the others Julia agrees to let John’s widow, Margaret visit.  At first Margaret appears to be loving and caring, but she is actually out for revenge.

The play was very much a two hander and I thought that Clare l’Anson (Julia) and Veronica Ryder (Margaret), both gave outstanding performances. They had lots of dialogue and their characterisations were superb. There was also excellent performance from Simon Dade (Gary), and Barbara Bone, (Anne) in the two smaller roles.

The crew had built a very impressive looking set, however, I felt that the exit to kitchen needed extra lighting and also when the front door was opened it was just a black cloth behind it, which didn’t look great.

Although there were a great many scene changes they were not too distracting and the dialogue kept a good pace. It was an enthralling play and I feel the audience really felt for Julia as Margaret’s character changed from being like a loving mother to an evil black widow out for revenge.  I was convinced that eventually Julia would come out on top, but sadly I was wrong.

Overall this was yet another fine performance from P& P Players, my congratulations to all concerned
