This was a solid performance of “Dads Army” true to the television series which as it is so fresh in people’s memories is almost impossible to do any other way. A much loved comedy, you can not fail to enjoy.
There were great performances from the cast, Lance Corporal Jones was very good and with Captain Mainwaring and Sergeant Wilson made a most amusing trio.
Special mention must be made of Private Godfrey who was very convincing as the willing but doddery gentleman.
Private Walker was extremely good; doubling up as the vicar he caught the mannerisms of both characters authentically.
Private Pike, complete with scarf, (and his Mum) was a joy to watch, Private Frazer looked the part and although at times, the accent was a little overdone he delivered a good and amusing performance.
Mr Hodges made a great Chief Warden, constantly trying to score points over the Home Guard
The first sketch was the classic” don’t tell them Pike” and had the suitably villainous “enemy” portrayed with gusto. The second, showed a different side of Mainwaring and he and Mrs Grey played their parts with sensitivity, bringing a pathos not normally associated with the very funny mayhem which usually typifies “Dad’s Army”
The final sketch (written especially for a Royal Variety Performance) was great fun and very well done
The Scenery was good and it really is amazing what you can do on this small stage.
Daphne Fensom gave great direction to this show and I look forward to her next production, an enjoyable evening and lots of laughs. Well done one and all.
