The Crowthorne Musical Players created a truly extraordinary Musical Theatre celebration at the Wilde Theatre. The bold selection of some less well-known songs from modern Musical Theatre combined with some absolute showstopping classics was wonderfully staged and lit and showcased the talented cast’s exceptionally good voices. It was wittily and charismatically narrated to identify the shows.

The joy of this type of show is that the Director and cast can pick the songs they really want to sing and match them to their cast’s gender mix and abilities, and this was done to perfection. The strong female roles of Six, Waitress, Come from Away and Heathers combined with the classic female parts from Wicked, and Phantom of the Opera gave this a powerful feminist celebratory feel.

This was enhanced by the junior sections delightfully charming roles in songs from Joseph and Matilda and a very funny meta song from Something Rotten which closed Act 1 wonderfully. However, it was the stunning full cast medley from Les Misérables with its poignant tribute to the Ukrainian people with yellow and blue neckerchiefs and lighting that was the show highlight.
