With music and lyrics by George & Ira Gershwin, & the book by Ken Ludwig we were in for a treat with Southampton's production of Crazy for You.
Director Louise Hodson has a great cast who have worked hard. Nigel Finch has the singing in control and the band were at the back of the stage which worked really well.
The show opens on Broadway at the Zangler Follies played by Mike Pavitt who is good in the part of the theatre director Bobby Child played by Tom Joyce is good in his role, he wants to audition for Zangler as he would like to be a musical star and not work in the bank owned by his family. Zangler isn't interested but that doesn't stop Bobby, his mother sends him out west to forclose on a theatre that is owned by the bank so he leaves his girlfriend of 5 years Irene Roth nicely played by Rachel Spence behind while he go's off.
We then get transported to the town and meet Polly Baker played by Susie Maycock who is great in the role with her dancing and singing. Her family run the theatre come post office. They know someone from the bank is coming to close them down which they don't want to happen.
Lank Hawkins played by Harry Taylor is the saloon owner he has lots of comedy moments, especially later with Ireen. He has offered to buy the theatre. Bobby takes an instant liking to Polly who doesn't want to know him so he disguises himself as Zangler and they start to put on a show to save the theatre. What happens next is a fun filled show of colourful costumes, music and dancing with lots of comedy. I especially liked the song 'What causes that' when there are the two Zanglers on stage.
There are lots of characters: the three guys were good, and the two head chorus girls, and all the ensemble work well together so there is something for everyone to do. Everything all ends happily.
Scenery, lighting and sound all good.
Well done to all envolved.
