I had no prior knowledge of this evening’s play ‘Constellations’, so my expectations of our evening related to my previous experiences of the Lindley Players' high standards in their other work – plays and panto. On that basis I anticipated a well rehearsed, word perfect, stimulating evening. Fortunately, those expectations were well met – triple fold.
First of all congratulations to the two players Lucie Nash as Marianne and Philip Halpin as Roland. They both transformed into their characters from the first word and continued throughout the play. That is not one each – but numerous alternatives that existed in Nick Payne’s universes – in other words ‘Constellations’. We were treated to numerous stages of Marianne and Roland’s lives and interactions over time – each set of ‘Marianne and Roland’s expressions’ on different journeys. From casual ‘passing ships passing in the night’ to mismatched and frustrated lovers, to the enduring love that was eternal. My goodness - you were both amazing. We as an audience had to engage in the process immediately and moving at pace it took a little time to grasp what was going on. But, having done so, the pace and excellent word-perfect acting was spellbinding. It was an emotional roller-coaster – laughing, being surprised and being devastated – it was an immersive experience. I’m sure that it stayed with members of the audience long after they had left the theatre.
Ollie Graveson - Director along with your production team didn’t miss a beat – lighting, sound, set – all helped to completed the magic. Everyone of the team that presented this evening deserved the standing ovation that met the end of the play. Congratulations.
