Come From Away takes us back to the tragic events of 11th September 2001 and focuses on the tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland that became a safe haven for travellers from all over the world. This musical was the latest offering of Concept Players at the Paget Rooms, Penarth. I was very pleased to be able to attend, alongside newly appointed regional councillor, Tony Evans.
The set was well thought out and well-constructed. It offered a rugged look, giving an authentic, small-town feel. Entrances and exits were well used by the cast and props and chairs were moved quickly and efficiently.
Lighting was very effective, particularly when signifying the associated colours of various airlines, and sound balance and quality was generally very good.
It was lovely to see a live band, led by musical director, Richard F Jackson. They were a well-drilled band who did not overpower the performers. It was also a nice touch to get the violin player on stage in the bar scene. Well done.
Until this production, I have never seen ‘Come From Away’, however I have heard several of the songs performed in concerts. I was not sure what to expect but I really enjoyed the music and the story, despite its very sad undertones.
The musical is a real ensemble piece, with everyone able to showcase their story at various points throughout the production. Therefore, it would be unfair of me to single out anyone in particular from this production. What I would say is that the cast all certainly deserve a name check! My congratulations to Laurence Clarke, Claire Corbett, Elgan Evans, Ellie Hoare, Sophie Hughes, Emily March, Hayley Mitchard-Toms, Ben Mussell, James Osborne, James Perons, Zoe Philpot, Jess Player and Richard Thomas! Everyone worked so hard and put on an absolutely excellent performance. The quality of the singing and the close harmonies were spot on! Everyone moved very well and created interesting and believable characters. A very slick and high standard performance from you all!
It was lovely to catch up with director, Paul Buckle after the performance and with other members of the Concept team to understand the work that had gone into the production. I understand that the rights holders sent a brochure through with staging and choreography ideas. Paul and his team interpreted these ideas really well, whilst also adding their own take. I congratulate you all on this.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed my night at the theatre watching something new. Having no preconceived ideas of plot and character was a lovely change for me. Well done to everyone involved on producing an extremely high quality production; one I’d definitely see again. I look forward to seeing you all later in the year.
