I didn't think it possible that there would be a musical revue or concert that I had not heard of - but I have been foiled! I had no idea what I was going to see on Saturday evening - I thought maybe a concert of snippets from past productions but nothing could be further from the truth - here was a musical revue of the highest order and I needed to know how it had been discovered - the Director of this piece, Richard Pascoe, explained that he had uncovered the book and score in a second-hand bookshop, was intrigued, he managed to get the CD - and here we were, witnessing a 'first' in this region to the delight of the audiences around West Yorkshire. Leeds G&S then took the show on a mini tour, popping up in church and community halls - and what a success it has been!
It was witten as an Off-Broadway show in 1989 - completely sung through, it reminds me in parts of early Sondheim, before his work became over-complicated. This was a most stylishly produced show, directed by Richard Pascoe, as his directorial debut - although you'd never know! It was well-rehearsed and the 8 strong cast were completely at their ease - that was obvious. The set, on a small stage, consisted of three door frames and furniture, painted in primary colours of red, blue and yellow. These were re-positioned by the cast to denote each scene quietly and efficiently. The clever use of adding their own primary colour to their basic black outfits linked the scenes perfectly. There was no actual story, more short scenes, reflecting on life and loves (lost and found) - the scenes were often comic but also sad - it is hard to explain without seeing the show. All the performers are principals in their own right, with strong singing voices and diction - no microphones here, but every word was clear. The Musical Director, Heather Pennwood, had guided her cast through their songs with panache and style. I must give a mention to the pianist, Kate Dooley, who accompanied the cast with sensitivity.
As always, the cast were supported by a creative team to the highest degree. Leeds G&S are really making their mark to give audiences something new and innovative - and that is great for amateur theatre in this area.
