I was delighted to be invited to the very first production of the newly formed Halifax YMCA Youth Pantomime Society, staged by this recently formed group of youngsters. Pantomimes are enjoyed by the young and not so young, but not often performed by the very young in leading roles.
Their ages range from five to fifteen and two fourteen year olds Alicia Irving and Shoney Furscow arranged the choreography for the youngsters.
Cinderella A Pantomime was written by Amanda Gatehouse a member of the senior Society who also directed the pantomime along with Andrew MacDonald. They deserve tremendous praise for introducing these youngsters into the world of Panto.
Cinderella is always a popular one to start with, a clever writer/director can embellish traditional stories to suit their particular age group and draw out the talent in them.
There was excellent diction from ones so young, the Baroness, The Town Crier, the Ugly Sisters, the Fairy Godmother and her assistants Bows, Bells And Sparkles to name but a few.
There was a really good stage set with minimal scenery, excellent lighting and lovely colourful costumes.
Although Halifax YMCA Pantomime Society has been in existence for many years they must be commended for training these children into learning stage skills at a very early age.
It was obvious they had thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they sang “The Sunshine Of my Smile “ in their finale exactly as the senior Society does every year.
My sincere Congratulations.
