As always, it was a pleasure to visit with PLOS and enjoy their popular Christmas pantomime at the Arthur Cotterell Theatre. This year’s choice of ‘Cinderella’ promised to be a lot of fun and the almost full auditorium certainly bode well for those in attendance.

Following the traditional storyline, this production had been re-written by Philip Ruby and Joe Beecroft to incorporate plenty of bad puns, topical humour and an excellent selection of music. This timeless story tells the story of Cinderella and her sudden rise from an unloved step-sister to finding true love and happiness when marrying a Prince.  It’s easy to understand why this ‘rags to riches’ romantic fantasy has remained such a popular show with audiences today.

Pantomime season is a time for the cast, and audience, to have fun and enjoy themselves. There are certain quirky rules that simply must be followed if the show is to be a success. To begin with, the audience isn’t expected to sit quietly but is actively encouraged to boo and hiss the ‘Baddie’ whilst cheering the ‘Goodie’. There simply must be an outrageous Dame, at least one ‘Oh no it’s not!’ moment, a Ghost and an ‘It’s behind you!’ moment. Cinderella certainly included all the ingredients for a lively and heartwarming show.

Congratulations must go to Kathryn Felton who, as Director, was responsible for the overall success of this pantomime. The principals had been well-cast and the attention to detail resulted in a performance that ran smoothly with no delays or distractions. It must have been pleasing to see all your hard work, and effort, come together in such a wonderful production. Congratulations also to Harriet Ruby who, as Producer ensured this strong management team came together to deliver in style.

Overall, this was another enjoyable afternoon visiting with PLOS. Congratulations to the entire production team and all involved both on and off stage for a successful production.  Thank you for inviting me along and I look forward to returning for your next production.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
