CHESS presents a challenge to any Company who presents it and AAODS was no exception but they rose to the challenge with great dignity and presented a show in which every member of the Company was totally focused. Director Sarah Fowler gave us a simple ,clean cut production of great dignity which greatly impressed all present and allowed the strong Musical Direction of Andrew Hopkins to dominate the production. The two minimalist settings worked well and were enhanced by an excellent lighting plot which lifted the presentation to a professional standard - well done !!
Andrew Fowler as The Arbiter impressed from Curtain up to Curtain down and held the stage on his every appearance.
Patrick Callaghan as Anatoly was a joy vocally and his rendition of “Anthem” captivated the audience, he was well partnered by Lucy Phillips as Florence whose stillness on stage impressed and who delighted the audience with her vocal ability. Ian Davies was the perfect foil as Freddie the American Grandmaster.
The entry of Evelin Sipos as Svetlana was one of the highlights of the evening. She met all of the challenges of the role with sheer style. Great support came from Peter Winter and Rob Jenkins as the Heads of the respective delegations .Abergavenny should be justifiably proud of such an adventurous Society this was a production which deserved Full Houses and should be supported fully in their future productions.
