Chess has one of the most difficult musical scores for both the principals and chorus to learn and perform so it is to their credit they gave an outstanding performance. All the seven main principals performed to a very high standard. The Arbiter (Dan Davies) The tournament director was very assured and confident with very clear diction and a fine voice. Frederick Trumper (Brandon Johnson) The American Grandmaster played the role with a most suitable moody agression with very strong vocals. Florence Vassy (Sarah Clarkson) Freddie's lover/second was absolutely brilliant she sung and acted with great style and conviction. Anatoly Sergievsky (Iain Harvey) The Russian Grandmaster had all the super talents needed for this very demanding role with a fine voice and very charming style again a brilliant piece of casting. Alexander Molokov (Terry Ford) Head of the Russian Delegation was every inch made to play this character it fitted him like a glove with his strong commanding voice and strong stage presence and his opposite number on the American team Walter de Courcey (John Whelpton) was well cast as an adviser to Frederick Trumper. The casting was completed by Alex Bush (Svetlana Sergievsky) Anatoly's estranged wife she gave a fine sympathetic display as the wronged wife with a fine voice her duet with Florence (I Know Him So Well) made famous by Elaine Page and Barbara Dickson was perhaps the outstanding number of this well produced show.
