On arrival at the theatre, I was immediately met by the most welcoming Front of House team. Their warm smiles and enthusiasm set the tone for the evening, and I absolutely adored their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-themed waistcoats and scarves. It’s always special when the theatre staff are included in the magic of the production - it makes the whole experience feel even more immersive. You could tell they were proud to be part of the show, and that energy was infectious before I’d even stepped inside the auditorium.

The opening number of ‘The Candy Man’ was a vibrant, infectious introduction to the story. With lively choreography, a colourful set, and an upbeat, catchy tune, it perfectly captured the spirit of the production while drawing the audience in with its charm. Willy Wonka and the ensemble brought so much energy and fun to the stage, creating a sense of anticipation for the enchanting journey ahead.

Willy Wonka was a mesmerizing presence, blending whimsy with an unpredictable edge that kept the audience spellbound. He wasn’t just a magical candy maker but a storyteller, a trickster, and a quiet observer, carefully testing each child to determine who truly deserved his factory. With a theatrical flair, he commanded the stage, interacting with the audience through witty lines and moments of humour while maintaining an air of mystery. His songs were filled with charisma, and his presence commanded attention, making him a captivating and complex figure who brought both mischief and mystery to the stage.

Charlie was played with such warmth and innocence that it was impossible not to root for him. From the very first moment he appeared on stage, there was a sincerity to his performance that made him feel incredibly real. His wide-eyed wonder, boundless imagination, and deep love for his family shone through in every scene, making his journey all the more moving. Despite his circumstances, Charlie never once felt sorry for himself - his unwavering belief in something better, in the power of dreams and kindness, made him such a loveable and endearing and heartfelt character.

Mrs Bucket was a captivating presence, bringing both strength and tenderness to the stage. Played with love and devotion, she beautifully conveyed the sacrifices and hopes of a mother determined to provide for her family. Her moments were particularly touching, filled with nurturing warmth and quiet resilience. Along with her grounded portrayal, Mrs Bucket’s lovely singing voice added an extra layer of emotion to the character, especially in the more vulnerable scenes. Her performance, while subtle, was essential to the story, reminding the audience of the power of family and unconditional love.

Grandpa Joe a delightful and charismatic character, bringing both charm and wisdom to the stage. His vibrant energy and playful spirit were contagious, making him an instant favourite among the audience. As Charlie’s confidant and supporter, Grandpa Joe provided a sense of warmth and encouragement, always there to lift Charlie’s spirits and share in his excitement. His strong singing voice added to the overall richness of the character, making him not only a loving grandfather but also a vital source of joy and strength for the family. Grandpa Joe’s infectious optimism and devotion made him an unforgettable part of the show.

Grandma Josephine, Grandpa George, and Grandma Georgina brought a delightful blend of wit and warmth to the stage, each adding their own unique flavour to the family dynamic. Their comedic timing was spot-on, creating moments of laughter that lightened the mood while still feeling deeply endearing. Grandma Josephine’s sharp wit, Grandpa George’s dry humour, and Grandma Georgina’s sweet, sometimes mischievous nature created a wonderful balance, making them an entertaining and lovable presence in the show. Their interactions with one another, as well as with Charlie and the rest of the family, felt genuine, showcasing the love and support they provided.

Each of the children who won a Golden Ticket was exactly as imagined - if not more exaggerated and hilarious. Augustus Gloop was the perfect embodiment of gluttony, and his pockets filled with sausages were a humorous touch that perfectly showcased his insatiable appetite. Veruca Salt was the epitome of spoiled entitlement, and her tantrums were both obnoxious and entertaining to watch. Violet Beauregarde’s fame-obsessed persona added a modern twist, with her over-the-top obsession with being the best while chewing gum incessantly. Mike Teavee was a tech-obsessed nightmare I could totally relate to - his complete distraction with his gadgets and utter disinterest in anything beyond his virtual world made his sardonic attitude so funny and painfully familiar. Each of these characters brought a unique touch of humour to the stage, and their exaggerated personalities made their fates even more entertaining.

The parents accompanying the Golden Ticket winners brought their own comedic flair to the show, each one amplifying the flaws of their children in humorous and exaggerated ways. Augustus Gloop’s mother was a caricature of indulgence, proudly supporting her son’s gluttony without a second thought, while Veruca Salt’s father was completely overwhelmed by her spoiled demands, scrambling to fulfil her every whim. Violet Beauregarde’s father, obsessed with his daughter’s quest for fame, relentlessly pushed her to be the best, driven by a sense of desperation. Mike Teavee’s mother, in contrast, was portrayed as a devoted yet somewhat clueless figure, completely dedicated to her son despite his screen obsession. Each of these parents delivered their roles with perfect comedic timing, adding layers of humour and absurdity that made their interactions just as memorable as their children’s antics.

I absolutely adored the Oompa Loompas. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was completely captivated by their incredible presence. The fantastic matching costumes, along with their lovely choreography and wonderful singing, made every appearance a joy to watch. Their musical numbers were fast, clever, and brilliantly executed. The Oompa Loompas were energetic, charming, and full of personality, their presence added a unique and delightful touch to the show that made every scene they were in even more enjoyable.

The entire ensemble made a wonderful contribution to the show, bringing so much character, energy, and enthusiasm to the stage. Their vibrant performances were full of personality, with lots of smiles and fantastic singing that added an extra layer of joy and excitement to the entire production. A special mention to both the news reporters, Jerry and Cherry, and to Mrs Green - all your performances were full of life and character, making your scenes delightful and adding something extra special to the show.

The lighting and sound were both professional and set the scene perfectly, enhancing the atmosphere throughout the performance. The costumes were bright, colourful, and visually striking, capturing the whimsical and vibrant nature of the story. Each character’s outfit was thoughtfully designed to reflect their personality.

The direction and choreography were both dynamic and seamless, ensuring the show flowed effortlessly from one scene to the next. The choreography was energetic and precise, with lively dance numbers that added to the overall excitement of the performance. The direction ensured that each moment, whether comedic or emotional, hit the right tone, allowing the cast to fully shine and engage the audience.

The musical was a dazzling, whimsical production that brings Roald Dahl’s beloved story to life with vibrant visuals, engaging performances, and a mix of classic and original songs that immerse you in the wonder of Willy Wonka’s world. It was truly a journey filled with pure imagination and scrumdiddlyumptious moments in every scene. A massive well done to all the cast and crew for their incredible work in creating such a memorable experience. Thank you for inviting me to be part of this magical journey!
