Wombwell Musical Theatre Society’s latest production, Celebrate Good Times, delivered exactly what its title promised – an uplifting, varied, and creatively themed evening of entertainment. From the vibrant opening to Kool & The Gang’s Celebration, the tone was set for a night brimming with music, fun, and audience involvement.
The concert’s structure worked especially well, with each section built around a distinct theme, giving the show pace and variety while allowing different performers to shine.
Act 1 opened with a stylish Spies / James Bond sequence. Nobody Does It Better was a standout, but the whole section offered a wide range of vocal styles, complemented by an atmospheric cocktail bar set-up and some well-played character acting from the cast.
The mood then shifted to Songs from Musicals, where the comedic duet You’re My Little Chu-Chi Face was a highlight. This section also introduced the talented youth performers, who impressed with Truly Scrumptious and Do-Re-Mi. Their confidence, stage presence, and musicality hinted at a bright future for the society.
A high-energy Football segment rounded off the first act. Benches at the back of the stage cleverly suggested stadium stands, and the inclusion of lyrics in the programme encouraged audience participation. The entire theatre joined in for a rousing Sweet Caroline, making for a jubilant close to Act 1.
Act 2 began with a lively Holidays theme, blending adult and youth ensembles in a musical journey from wartime favourites to modern pop. Audience involvement was once again encouraged, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere.
The following Space / Moon Landing section featured a charming performance of The Moon and Me from The Addams Family, which proved to be one of the evening’s most touching moments.
The Boy/Girl Bands medley brought infectious energy and nostalgic appeal, spanning decades of pop hits. Wannabe and No Matter What particularly stood out for their harmonies and enthusiasm.
The show concluded with the VE Day 80 tribute – a heartfelt and patriotic finale featuring wartime classics such as Pack Up Your Troubles and White Cliffs of Dover, alongside an upbeat tap routine to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. Union Jack flags were handed out to the audience, creating a vibrant sea of colour and a truly celebratory ending.
Overall, Celebrate Good Times was a well-constructed and thoroughly enjoyable concert. While it’s impossible to name every performer, a useful suggestion for future productions would be to list soloists in the programme to ensure they receive recognition.
Congratulations to the entire company and the creative team – Director Andy Harris, Musical Director Josephine Owen, and Choreographer Colleen Owen – for delivering such a joyful and polished production.
