The young people of the Youth Section never fail to impress and in this production we saw further evidence of their talent. The obvious difference with this show is, of course, in the extent of choreography it requires but another factor is that it is really a collection of cameo performances by a variety of characters. It requires a number of principals each doing their bit rather than only a few key performers who are seldom off stage. Compare “Les Miserables” for instance, with its reliance on the two main protagonists.
Although one or two of the members played more than one character, the depth of the talent available enabled the production team to spread the parts around many of the 34 involved. In a further display of versatility, cellist Ben Papworth left his instrument behind in order to deputise for one of the principals for two performances. That none of the cast was over 19 made it a little difficult for some of them to look the part of the older characters but their experience enabled them to bring credibility to their performances. This was particularly evident with Naomi Halliday’s portrayal of Grizabella, the Glamour Cat and her rendition of the show’s best known song (“Memory”) presented no problem to her rich vocal tone. Mention must also be made of Sam Rippon’s excellent diction in the dual roles of Gus, the Theatre cat and Bustopher Jones.
There were excellent performances from all the supporting parts and the choreography made the most of the considerable skills of those for whom dance was their greater strength. I must also congratulate Ruth Symington for a creative lighting plot which greatly enhanced the overall experience.
There were “House full” notices for the performance I attended and these were richly deserved.
