It was evident from the moment we reached our seats and saw the preset stage, that a huge amount of attention by the production team, had been given. The set was perfect in its detail, with old rubbish purposely arranged for maximum theatrical effect and hidden entrances and exits strategically placed for ease of movement by the large cast. From the entrance of the first ‘cats’ until the dying phrases of the last song, this young cast entertained with a total energy, discipline and talent that would be envied by any ‘adult’ society.

Because this is a junior section of the WSM Operatic Society, attention was given to all aspects of theatrical presentation. The company singing was superb with harmonies being heard and maintained throughout the show. The acting with its drama and emotion, comedy and charm was sustained until the very end when we saw their excited smiles as they realised they had a full standing ovation from the audience. The dancing was excellent and production team ‘common sense’ was demonstrated in that the trained dancers were to the fore in required scenes and movement for the whole company in other scenes was fully within age and talent ability.

The lighting was mostly fine with exciting colour changes for dramatic effects, there were a few dark areas on the stage when it was difficult to see the action properly and although the spots were used to great effect, with the extensive makeup masking the ‘cats’ faces, it was sometimes difficult, particularly in group numbers, to see who was actually singing the solo’s. This is a small comment that in no way spoiled or interrupted this exceptional production.

I understand that with a few exceptions, the costumes and the wigs had all been made locally. With leotards sprayed to match the cat’s character and wigs of every shape and style as to be appropriate for ‘a cat’, the characters were colourful, exciting and original. This was a very large company of mixed ages, occasionally the stage was very crowded but excellent groupings and good use of auditorium aisles and entrances enhanced the presentation and enjoyment of the audience.

Of course there were some truly amazing and outstanding performance. Oh what a wonderful prospect for the future if some of the cast join the adult society. The quite exceptional voices must be heard again and again. Probably I should not name individuals in such a large overall talented production, and the disguising face painting, costumes and wigs make it difficult to be certain I have the correct persona. But I’ll take a chance and mention Beth Perrins (Munkustrap) an amazing performer, a dancer and singer, with her expressive face she was joy and a delight. I could listen to her all night. Freya Perrins (Rumpleteazer) a most talented comedienne in the making, and Georgia Gifford (Grizabella) was another outstanding performer, her voice was superb and she paid amazing attention to the detail and emotional side of this role. But there were no weak links in this multi talented cast!

Production team - you are dedicated and inspiring teachers and leaders, you should be justly proud of all your ‘cats’. Your production values are of the highest order and your warmth, encouragement and enjoyment with the children is evident. The work involved must have been immense and I congratulate you all. How are you going to follow this ‘tour de force’?

Congratulations to the Oppitts, as entertaining and pleasurable show as I could wish to see!
