It could be argued that this show should start after the prologue, to allow us to enjoy the music of the Carousel Waltz without interruption but then that would deprive us of being whisked away to the scenes of a joyous and lively fairground with revolving horses and lights illuminating the whole theatre, setting the scene for what was to come – a superb evening.

The staging was impressive and scene changes were carried out seamlessly, enhanced by good lighting design. Costumes colourful.

The excellent cast was headed by Jamie Thomas as Billy Bigelow, the carousel barker, with a violent temper. Jamie was able to show a man always on the verge of violence but with charm of being able to bewitch women as well. None more so than Julie Jordan, a self-willed mill girl. Both of them had fine singing voices and made the most of the great songs in the show, which have survived for more than 50 years including “If I Loved You” (one of the Queen’s favourites I am told). They are backed up by a charming performance from Georgia Fawcett as Carrie Pipperidge, with a fine voice and comedic timing and expressions. She was teamed with Elliott Emanuel as Enoch Snow. Add in a great portrayal of the evil Jigger Craigin by Kevin Randall, Lelia Di Domenico as Nettie and Lauraine Griffiths as Mrs Mullins and, David Fawcett, you have a cast of which you can be proud.

What is a show without the support of the chorus whose vocal ranges were excellent throughout, with those memorable songs ably played by a talented orchestra under the leadership of Steve Rhind. I am always impressed by the standard of the choreography in TWODS shows and this was no exception, with chorus numbers but especially Angie Cameron as Louise in the dream scene. Well done Elizabeth and Jessica. The highlight for me, has to be the final rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” – not a dry eye in the house.
