One of the best well-loved favourites from the Rogers and Hammerstein's repertoire, with music that we all love so well, got under way with a colourful opening.  The Society had a superb backcloth full of stars with a projected moon, sometimes a full moon, other times a new moon, and this really enhanced the production.

They had a very handsome Billy Bigelow (Richard Shingleton), the girls really would have "fallen" for him.  Cleckheaton & Spenborough had a wealth of young talent both Julie Jordan and Carrie Pepperidge (Lauren Middleton and Abble Sampson)  had excellent singing voices and gave competent performances.  Mr Snow's (Kevin Moore) portrayal was spot on, the aduience loved his guffaws and mannerisms.  Nettie Fowler (Judith M. Morris) gave a commanding performance and her sympathetic touch with Julie was just right.  Jigger Craigin (Phil Jowett) played the baddie to perfection, and his seduction scene with Carrie worked well.  A good performance from Louise Bigelow (Victoria Taylor) another youngster with a good future.  I thought the Orchestra was a little weedy and lacked body, and I also missed the usual dance team this year.  Apart from that, a good evenings entertainment.  Well done Cleck & Spen.
