Carmen, the opera by Georges Bizet, is based on an 1845 novel by French dramatist Prosper Mérimée. The title character, Carmen, a wild Spanish gypsy, is unscrupulous in matters of the law and of the heart. Great plot for an opera and for Kentish Opera to get their teeth into and, once again, they succeeded with great professionalism. I have said this before and will say it again: when you put the dream team together, you have a wonderful opera from Kentish Opera. These being the dream team.
Director, Terry John Bates, Conductor Robyn Sevastos, Set Designer Enid Strutt and costume designer Carol Stevenson. You know when these are in place you are in for a splendid night at the Opera, and this Carmen didn’t fail them in any way. It gave us grand opera at the highest level. All the principals gave us faultless performances, backed up by supporting members in minor roles and Kentish Opera’s wonderful large chorus.
I’m lost for words, every time I write a review for Kentish Opera. I’m now looking forward to your October performance of ‘Dido and Aeneas’, an opera I have never seen.
Thank you thank you Kentish Opera for inviting me, you always come up with a stupendous night at the Stag Theatre and it shows by your audiences, packed to the hilt.
