At first glance, Calendar Girls was an unusual choice for a company as large as WWOS as there is not a huge amount of ensemble work. There are however a large number of excellent roles, particularly for ladies of perhaps greater experience. As it turned out, imaginative use was made of the ensemble which, together with a strong line up of principals, produced a show prompting a standing ovation from a Friday night audience. Characterisations were well drawn and the subject matter dealt with sensitively, balanced with the humour of what was obviously an incredibly brave venture by the original Calendar Girls. The WWOS ladies who bared all (tastefully presented to conceal anything potentially dangerous) deserve particular credit – but mainly because of their committed portrayals of such a variety of characters and performances of some cracking Tim Firth/Gary Barlow songs.
