It was with great pleasure that I joined the audience at the Congress theatre Cwmbran, to see their long-awaited production of Calendar Girls by the Christchurch Musical society. Moving out of their traditional venue and into a Regional Theatre setting was quite a challenge, but the Society in every way proved that they were more than ready.
Under the Co- direction of Bryn and Ceri Middleton, the Calendar Girls took to the stage in style with an amazing set and scenery, created by the members of the society. This must be congratulated, as from the opening of the show the effect created, provided an atmosphere that was very much appreciated by the audience.
The ladies of the W.I. form the heart of this production and the chosen cast gave an outstanding performance. My congratulations to Jan Parfitt as Annie. Her performance, though soft and sensitive, clearly showed the grit and determination of the character. A very emotional performance from Jan and very well balanced in the character of Chris, played by Kate Summers, who gave a very strong performance, completely capturing the character of Chris. Good performances from the men in their lives. John, played by Peter Routley and Rod played by Dave Williams. a difficult scenario that was portrayed with both sensitivity and laughter, superbly supported by the “W.I. team”, Cora (Holly Hayward), Celia (Angela Everett). Ruth (Rachel Edwards), Jessie (Liz Griffiths), Marie (Claire Sharp).
It was a pleasure to watch these ladies in action. Not only in their solo performances, but as an intrinsic part of the whole story. My compliments to their characterisation, their sensitivity and humour, not underestimating their outstanding bravery. The audience loved every minute.
It was so inspiring to see the confident performances of the younger cast members. Gethin Sisley as Tommo, Myah Middleton as Jenny, and Ben Middleton as Danny. Superb characterisation and great support of each other. Well done.
My respect to the whole ensemble, their enthusiasm shone throughout the whole performance and there was little doubt as to the enjoyment felt by the whole audience.
My heartfelt thanks. For your invitation to this 50TH Anniversary Celebratory Performance. The challenge was accepted, and the Society succeeded. Well done to you all.
