Cleckheaton and Spenborough excelled themselves with this much loved and celebrated play by Tim Firth, based on the true story of John Baker.  When he was diagnosed with a terminal illness, his wife and her friends at their local Women's Institute decided to raise money for the hospital that cared for him.  They caused quite an outrage within the 'WI' organisation by posing for an 'Alternative WI Calendar' showing them wearing nothing but pearls and smiles, while hiding behind cakes and flowers.  All the ladies portrayed their characters beautifully, from Annie (Karen Riding) who played John's wife to the local vicar's daughter with her colourful language.  There was humour and pathos in abundence, a true team effort from all.  The three gentlemen also played their small roles well, complimenting the ladies, from John slowly fading away, to Lawrence the photographer adding more humour.  Excellent direction with lots of thoughtful touches, I thought the slide show in the first act was extremely well done, with the clever lighting making you think there really was a slide show happening,  A play that held your attention throughout and was a joy to watch.  Congratulations to all involved.
