The play opened on a well-designed set of the Church Hall. The set dressing showed that it was used by a variety of organisations, with posters and children’s paintings. The opening scene introduces us to the main female characters and we instantly saw how diverse they all were. All the roles had been well cast and developed, and were totally believable. The lighting effects for the slide show on ‘broccoli’ were well timed. The sound levels were good throughout, especially at the beginning of the second act at the W.I. Conference. It was an interesting set with the swivelling panels to show indoor and outdoor scenes. Full use was made of the hydraulic lift beneath the stage, in this Theatre, to create the hill. The roller coaster of emotions demanded by the play need to be convincing, as most of the audience will have experienced them. Here we felt everything from joy to sorrow, and back again. The dialogue had pace, everyone was confident with their lines and performed with energy. This uninhibited cast, entered into the photography scene with gusto, which was rewarded with much applause. The many hours of hard work put in by Director Rob Mauler and his assistant Richard Murray with the cast and production team certainly produced in Rob’s words “an effortless, entertaining evening of theatre”.
