What a superb project, not just a very good production of this heartrending yet funny play but the production of another Calendar in aid of Leukaemia Research and also Breast Cancer Care and the Rotherham Hospice. The calendar is neat, well presented, doubling as the programme for the show, and full of photographs of the cast in various poses of modest nudity, looking very attractive and happy to be there.
As to the play itself it was obvious that a great deal of hard work was put into it in many aspects. The story now being so well known, the cast had a great deal to live up to and live up to it they did. All six ladies, Annie ( Rosie Burke), Chris (Christine Chafer ),Cora (Jo Toop), Jessie (Sheila Halse), Celia (Elaine Demaine), and Ruth (Naomi Deaville) made their characters strongly individual, successfully carrying the storyline through it's moments of sadness, hilarity and resolution. They were ably supported by the rest of the cast with a particularly sympathetic portrayal of John (Roger Green) and the WI Chairman (Sarah Cleverley) who desperately tried to stay in charge.
Finally full marks to the Director for the whole production but also because the width of the Civic Theatre stage is normally a great advantage, in this case trying to ensure the ladies' modesty from all angles must have created quite a problem, successfully overcome I'm glad to say! A 'very well done' to all concerned.
