This show holds fond memories for me, being the first “book” show I performed in, way back in 1964 and here I was reminded of the super melodies and full chorus work that made it so popular with amateur societies.  We don’t see it so often now and it is a credit to this society that they continue to perform traditional musicals along with more modern works.

The Director was lucky to have a selection of experienced performers taking a number of the main leads who were complemented nicely by some members who are learning the craft.

I think the part of Calamity is marvellous and it was well filled by Roselyn Shallcross who showed her with her differing style of numbers.  Russell Fallon again stepped up to the plate as a laid back Wild Bill Hickock and I thought Heather Embleton was impressive as Katie Brown.  She will have enjoyed working opposite the always consistent Andy Collinson (Danny Gilmartin).  David Cameron’s Frances Fryer was almost too good in A Hive Full of Honey which was performed in strong falsetto.  Ian Thompson was an energetic Henry Miller and Laura Thompson continues to grow, here playing Susan, and Laura Embleton did what was required as Adelaide Adams.

There were also some good support from the rest of the cast in some of the minor roles which helped give strength to the production.

The set was simple and effective and was adapted for each scene, utilising a small side set for Adelaide Adams’s dressing room.  This meant that The Black Hills of Dakota didn’t go on for ever as often used to be the case!

I am surprised to be saying that I expected more from the choreography as at times I felt it lacked a bit of punch.

I still came out happy though!
