~~With a miscellany of music varying from Mary Poppins to Les Miserables, Disney to West Side Story I am sure there would be more than enough to suit everyone’s taste and judging from the audience reaction I am certain this was the case.
The show opened with Disney Dazzle with some of the hit songs from Disney shows and films and including some of the lesser known ones resulting in a great section. It was good in this show to see everyone on stage being given a chance to do something if they wished. All too often we see people who are on the back row of the chorus and unless they are given that chance there they will always be. This can of course be a risk but if a society is willing to take that risk then “good on ‘em”.
Interspersed with the music there were ample comedy items from various members as well as solos, duets etc, one I particularly enjoyed was “The Vagrant and the Golfer” featuring George and Peter, this was acted really well and had a great punch line which was professionally delivered. I also enjoyed Sue Bowskill’s performance of You’re My World which of course was the late Cilla Black’s song.
We also had some audience participation in 500 miles, The Proclaimers’ hit number with Martin and Tom; this again was very well delivered and got the audience joining in with the singing and the clapping.
Special mention must be made of the vocal arrangements in this show by The Musical Director, Ray Gallagher, no mean feat when you consider the number of songs in each section and also taking into account the voices on stage, this was made especially difficult due to small number in the gent’s chorus but credit must be made to them for the valiant effort they made with each song. The ladies’ chorus produced some really enjoyable harmonies in the sections and I especially enjoyed “Sky Fall” in the James Bond selection.
All this linked together with some brilliant costumes and subtle lighting effects produced a very enjoyable show.
Well done to all involved in this production and also to the ladies serving the drinks during the show and the delicious supper in the interval.
