A supersonic production adorned the boards of the Paget Rooms where Margaret Donaldson directed a very engaging interpretation of this play.
The set was well dressed and gave the right ambiance for this farce, which portrays the love life of Bernard, (Brian Smith) a swinging bachelor of the 1960’s and his shy and retiring friend Robert, (Robert Gairey).
This show really moved at a very slick pace thanks to some first class acting and slick dialogue, which is so important in this genre. In fact the show was so slick I almost expected a third act!
Now talking “Slick”, Brian Smith was outstanding in his portrayal of Bernard. Suitably suave, his delivery and accent was perfect; giving a cheeky ad-lib to the dreaded virus that had infected him with a nasty cough on the night I was there. Don’t worry Brian; no doubt the whole cast was stricken with it the following week, following all that kissing…….well done!
Brains entourage of three blissfully unaware stewardesses complimented his character beautifully. Gabriella played by Amanda Matthews and Gloria played by Lucy Clevitt were fine foils to Brian and Roberts high jinks.
Luisa Davey was suitably Germanic in her delivery of Gretchen a very strong performance and great characterisation. Laura Edwards gave us Bernard’s long-suffering maid Bertha. Laura delivered deadpan, a performance of note, as she negotiated her way to a 70% pay rise before the night was out.
My thanks to Wendy Gardner and the PODS team for a warm welcome and a show well executed.
