Written by Dennis Potter and taking its title from AE Houseman’s A Shropshire Lad, Blue Remembered Hills was originally shown on television before being adapted for the stage. Set in WW2 1943, the play tells the story of seven children in one day.
This seven-strong cast of adult-children captured the chaotic lives of seven-year-olds in performances of good physicality. Portrayals were pitched at just the right level to create the illusion that these really were children rather than adults play acting.
The cast of Karl Whitcombe [Willie], Damon Gibson [Peter], Catrin McCarthy [Jo], Amanda Artaou [Angela], Alison Shephard [Audrey], Stephen Lane [Donald] and Patrick Baker [Raymond] worked very hard, producing some creditable performances creating some very nice pieces of theatre. Excellent team work, good delivery of dialogue, clear diction and maintained accents all made for a polished performance from talented cast.
As is often the case in amateur Societies, the absence of men means that female actors have to step in where appropriate and in this production it worked well.
The set was simple and worked well giving the actors plenty of space for their child like movements. Costumes were just right for the production.
This was my final official visit as NODA Rep to RATS, therefore I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your hospitality over the years.
