A short play of 1 hour by Dennis Potter concerning a group of 7 year olds playing in the Forest of Dean one summer afternoon in 1943. The title is from a line in a poem from The Shropshire Lad by A.E. Housman. A very testing play with all the cast of adults playing 7 year old children. But this they did with great distinction. The interplay between the characters was excellent whether it was idle chatter, playing games, fighting for the supremacy of the group or the bullying of the member they had singled out and who was unable to cope and from which the final tragedy took place. The set was simple and gave the actors plenty of space for their child like movements . All the cast gave excellent characterisations using not only movements but vocal technics to convince us they were really 7 year old children. Sound and lighting added to the atmosphere. The whole was a very convincing, energetic, physical and confident production giving us, the audience much food for thought.
