I have been a fan of “Blood Brothers – the Musical” for over 20 years and so I attended “Blood Brothers – the Play” with great trepidation. From the start my fears were put to one side and I became engrossed in this emotional production by Suzanne Scale. She clearly understood the nuances of the play and gave us a night to remember.
The simple but well designed set worked well, complemented by atmospheric lighting which enhanced the varying moods of the play.
The central role of Mrs. Johnson was given a riveting performance by Tracey Coleman, who knew how to take a pause and how to work that pause. A nicely rounded and touching performance.
Steve Smith played the mischievous Mickey and together with Chris Powell as Eddie they expertly managed the transition from children to adults. Their final confrontation together proved to be one of the highlights of the evening.
Mike Gelder as the Narrator brought the right touch of blackness to the proceedings, leading us along the path of destruction.
Mrs. Lyons, the “other” mother was well played by Helen Ward, we saw her physically crumble before our eyes bringing the play to a dramatic close.
As Linda the friend of the brothers Hannah Cargius entered into the fun and spirit and also grew up before us.
In the roles of Milkman/Doctor Steve Lane demonstrated an acute sense of comic timing, making a small role memorable.
Thank you R.A.T.S. for an unforgettable night of theatre.
